Lunch at Vallarta Grill in Gastown

This weekend a group of us went for lunch at the Vallarta Grill in Gastown.  The inside is roomy, with a dance floor and a second level and the service was friendly.  However, if you’re looking for incredible Mexican food, I’m afraid this isn’t a place I would recommend.  We started off with complimentary tortilla chips and salsa, which is always a plus.  The minus is someone went crazy with the salt shaker when making the salsa.  If you’re in need of extra sodium, then you’re definitely in luck!

Main courses around the table included beef and chicken fajitas, cheese quesadillas, nachos with guacamole and chicken enchiladas.  I had the chicken enchiladas, which were cooked properly but nothing spectacular.  I also tried the nachos with guacamole and refried beans.  The guacamole had some bite from the welcome addition of raw onion and the nachos were definitely my favourite.  The chicken fajitas were described as similar to a Chinese stir fry and considered much tastier than the beef ones.  No one was swooning over their meals, but the staff readily accommodated requests for the kids and this was greatly appreciated.

We were also celebrating my nephew’s birthday that day, so the staff kindly brought out a piece of lemon cheesecake for him.  He and his sister liked the dessert and had fun, so that to me was the best part of the meal.

The Vallarta Grill is located at 102 Water Street in Gastown.  If I return, I will nom on the nachos with refried beans and guacamole.
