My grandfather’s brownies, with a little tweak

I’m now beginning to experience the grey days that Vancouver has to offer.  Rainy, cloudy days like today call for comfort food like my grandfather’s chocolate brownies.  I’ve been tweaking this recipe for a little while now and my latest version involves adding 5 squares of melted semi-sweet chocolate into the simple batter that consists of butter, sugar, eggs, flour and cocoa.  I must say it’s a nice addition that adds to the moisture and depth of the brownie.

Normally I make these brownies with cream cheese frosting with a healthy dose of Nutella.  This time, I took my standard cream cheese frosting recipe from Bon Appetit and added 3 squares of melted semi-sweet chocolate.  It turned out quite well, but I think I prefer Nutella 🙂
